Sonequa Martin-Green’s outer-space adventures are about to get a whole lot more cartoonish, as the actor is in negotiations to star in Space Jam 2. The sequel to the most ‘90s movie ever released has been brewing for several years now under the guidance of LeBron James’s production studio. To think back when this teaser was released, Obama was still President. Seems like a lifetime ago.
Although this project has been in the works for a while, there’s still no publicly known synopsis aside from: the greatest basketball player of all-time runs the court with The Looney Tunes. (Yes, I called LeBron the GOAT. Don’t @ me.) Martin-Green, who is currently starring in Star Trek: Discovery, is in talks to play James’s wife, and I hope this won’t be a bit role. Terence Nance, the creator of the fantastic HBO sketch-comedy Random Acts of Flyness, is set to direct, which gives me hope that Space Jam 2 will be a much weirder and artistically-fulfilling endeavor than a legacyquel to a Nike commercial would suggest.
Space Jam 2 is set to be released July 16, 2021, with Nance directing and Ryan Coogler producing. Martin-Green will presumably star alongside James, Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, and whatever horrifying eldritch abominations the Monstars have evolved into.
