It’s unfortunately very easy to dismiss most Anime out of hand. There’s just so much of it that it’s difficult for a series to break through as one of the special ones to take seriously. But inevitably some of them do make that leap. Cowboy Bebop is one of the big ones.
I haven’t seen the show in over a decade, so I don’t know how well it holds up, but my memories of its highly stylized offerings are pretty positive. So much so that the idea of a live-action remake isn’t totally offensive to me.
Of course, Netflix is making one. And now, we finally know its cast. John Cho will play Spike, Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage) will play Jet, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s Daniella Pineda will play Faye and Suburbicon’s Alex Hassell will play the villain Vicious. There’s also a little kid and a corgi that either haven’t been cast yet or won’t appear in the show.
I’ll leave it to you to argue over these choices and how good/bad they are. It’s Anime, so I expect a very measured and fair discussion. My main curiosity is how much this thing can capture the original show’s style since so much of that was tied to its medium. I guess I’m about to find out!
