Back in December, Netflix dropped the first-ever "choose your own adventure"-style episode of Black Mirror, and the results were...well, let's call them mixed. The performances were on point and the series' trademark anti-tech stance was explored from a fun new angle, but the episode itself (really more of a feature, but let's not get dragged into that debate again) felt more like a moderately amusing diversion than the Black Mirror we all know and love.
At the time, we knew a fifth season of Charlie Brooker's long-running anthology series was in the works, but we didn't know anything about it - who'd star in this new batch of episodes, when they might air, what they might be about. In typical Brooker/Netflix style, that information was kept a mystery.
This is the first trailer for Black Mirror season five, and everything looks in its right place. You've got an impressive cast (including Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Topher Grace, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice and Miley Cyrus), you've got your top-notch production design (which looks to include another dip into the world of video games) and you've got your ostensibly helpful pieces of technology making life difficult for everyone (that digital assistant looks particularly ominous). There is, however, a twist: this season of Black Mirror will apparently only feature three new episodes. That's kind of a bummer, but maybe they'll be feature length?
We'll find out when Black Mirror returns on June 5th.
