Look, I'm not big on romantic comedies. Too many of 'em feel trite and calculated, too saccharine for my tastes. Whenever a good one comes along (like, say, Long Shot, which is being sadly ignored in theaters even as we speak), it's always a pleasure, but I find those gems to be very few and far between.
Nahnatchka Khan's Always Be My Maybe, on the other hand, looks like it might just hit my rom-com sweet spot: it stars two powerhouse funny people (Ali Wong and Randall Park), features one helluva surprise cameo appearance from (REDACTED), and the film's first trailer actually got a few laughs out of me. This is far more than I can say for most rom-coms (or their trailers).
See what you think:
Just last night I was revisiting Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's The Interview (remember when that was a big deal?), and I was reminded how great Park is in that movie. He is, in fact, the best thing in it. Ali Wong, meanwhile, is a lethally funny standup comedian (if you've not already watched Wong's Hard Knock Wife, also via Netflix, get on that shit immediately). Seeing these two headline a rom-com is reason enough to get me interseted; that the trailer itself is funny is an added bonus. I will absolutely check this one out when it hits Netflix on May 31st.
How about you folks? Rom-com fans, or not so much? What do you think of the trailer above? Sound off in the comments below if you've got thoughts.
