DC Universe Has Already Canceled SWAMP THING

As was the case with the streaming network's Doom Patrol, the word on DC Universe's Swamp Thing series has been largely positive (it's currently sitting at a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes), which one assumed would be music to the ears of DC Universe execs who were reportedly very mixed on the show's first batch of episodes. Indeed, the response was so strong, we sorta figured those cancellation rumors would sink right back into the swamp.

Not so much! According to Variety, Swamp Thing has been officially canceled, mere weeks after premiering on the DC Universe platform. If, like me, you were strongly considering shelling out for a DC Universe subscription in order to see this weird, creepy (and, according to some reports, sexy???) show about a swamp-man, well, you might want to reconsider. One season's all we're getting. 

This is an unfortunate turn of events, to be sure, but it's also an interesting one. It's hard not to wonder what happened here. Perhaps the show was too costly. Perhaps they'd like to divert that same funding to some other new serries. Perhaps the DC Universe platform did not see its subscriber count increase in the wake of Swamp Thing's release, and they had a goal to hit. Right now, there's no official word (note: this Twitter thread, from John Gholson, may shed some light on the issue)(update: nope).
