RIP Netflix’s THE OA (2016-2019)

Britt Marling and director Zal Batmanglij's bonkers sci-fi series won't be back for a third season.

In an unfortunate turn of events for those of you who were watching Netflix's The OA, the streaming network announced today that the trippy sci-fi series - which hailed from Britt Marling and Zal Batmanglij - will not be returning for a third season.

Says Cindy Holland, Netflix's VP of Original Content:

“We are incredibly proud of the 16 mesmerizing chapters of The OA, and are grateful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realizing it through their incredible artistry. We look forward to working with them again in the future, in this and perhaps many other dimensions.”

From the beginning, The OA has been something of a niche title, thoroughly beloved by a dedicated fanbase but never quite making the leap to becoming a Stranger Things-sized hit for Netflix. It is, by all account, deeply mysterious and frequently bonkers, and I'm told that the show's second season ended on something of an open-ended cliffhanger that would've established a very interesting third season. If there's an upside here for fans, it's that both Marling and Batmanglij are very talented folks, and will surely have no trouble moving on to new projects.
