Sounds Like Henry Golding Will Headline The SNAKE EYES Movie
We haven't heard anything about Paramount's long-gestating G.I. Joe spin-off, Snake Eyes, since this past December, but today brings a most intriguing update: Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding has entered final negotiations to headline the film. Given Golding's blinding handsomeness and ongoing popularity, we have to assume they're gonna let him take off the mask from time to time.
The news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter, who also note the film is "said to center on Snake Eyes seeking revenge for his father’s death by joining ninja clan, in process finding acceptance." We are not, as you well know, well-versed in G.I. Joe mythology around these parts, but we do know a serviceable premise when we hear one. Throw in Golding and some well-shot action and they might just be onto something here.
Snake Eyes has appeared in previous G.I. Joe films (where the character was played by Ray Park), but this will be the character's first solo effort, and one of several planned spin-off Paramount and Hasbro have been working on for the G.I. Joe franchise. Snagging Golding at this point in his career is something of a coup for the studio, and has us taking the whole thing a bit more seriously than we might otherwise (the fact that the film's being directed by Robert Schwentke, who directed the first two Divergent movies and R.I.P.D., is not the best possible news, perhaps, but let's try and remain positive).
Nothing else to report at this time, but stay tuned for further updates on Snake Eyes as they roll in.
