The James Wan-produced Mortal Kombat movie is picking up steam, as The Hollywood Reporter has a rather sizable casting update for the upcoming film directed by Simon McQuoid. First – and most important – things first: Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano, whose prolific career includes roles in Ichi the Killer and Thor: Ragnarok, has signed on to play Raiden, the god of thunder portrayed by Christopher Lambert in the previous film adaptations. Asano joins Indonesian actor Joe Taslim (The Night Comes For Us), who was recently cast as Sub-Zero, the masked fighter who uses ice in combat. THR additionally reports that Supergirl star Mehcad Brooks will play special forces vet Jax, while Power Rangers reboot star Ludi Lin will play Liu Kang, and newcomer Sisi Stringer has taken on the role of Mileena – the gnarly clone of Kitana created by series villain and powerful sorcerer Shang Tsung, who crafted her in his flesh pits (yes, that is what they are called, I'm sorry).
Based on the video game franchise of the same name (but you already knew that), Mortal Kombat centers on a group of highly-skilled fighters recruited from various realms for the ultimate fighting tournament. There are a few more notable characters from the series that we can probably expect to see cast in the coming months, including Shang Tsung, Scorpion (what good is Sub-Zero without his arch-nemesis?), Kitana, and Sonya Blade. Johnny Cage could also be fun if you got an actor with a good sense of humor about himself. Oh, and I guess maybe Kano – though I'm not sure why you really need him. I'd rather see Baraka.
How about you? Drop your deepest hopes and dreams for Mortal Kombat casting in the comments. Who knows, maybe I will even read them.
