In a new interview with Collider, Dolemite is My Name star Eddie Murphy confirms that another Beverly Hills Cop movie is on the way:
"That’s what we’re doing after Coming to America 2. We’re doing Beverly Hills Cop and then the plan is to get back on stage and do stand-up. That’s what I’ll be doing mostly is stand-up.
"These movies and [hosting] Saturday Night Live it’s kind of like…I’m looking at it as a bookend. If I decided I wanted to stay on the couch forever, I ended it on a funny note.”
Now, we've certainly heard this one before, but this time there's reason to believe Murphy might be serious: Craig Brewer's Dolemite is My Name (which recently screened to excitedly-frothing-at-the-mouth reviews at this year's Fantastic Fest) finds the actor more creatively charged and present than he's been in years. It's a jaw-droppingly good movie, and Murphy is outstanding in it (do not be surprised to see him nominated come awards season). Brewer, of course, is also directing Murphy in Coming 2 America, and recently revealed - via this interview, over at Uproxx - that he and Murphy have an idea for another Beverly Hills Cop, were that something they'd like to do.
In other words, if another Beverly Hills Cop is ever gonna happen, it's probably gonna happen soon, with Brewer at the helm and Murphy in high creative spirits. We will, of course, retain most of our excitement until the project actually goes in front of cameras (and, yes, until we've seen what Murphy and Brewer have come up with for Coming 2 America), but for now, we are comfortable raising our hype levels to "Orange".
Stay tuned for more on this situation as it develops, and get your bodies ready for Dolemite is My Name: y'all are gonna love it.
