Wanna See The First Episode Of The New ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?

Come get your YA horror fix, for the low low price of "totally free".

BMD readers of a certain age will be readily familiar with Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of The Dark?, the early '90s horror anthology series which basically served as the cable network's answer to HBO's Tales From The Crypt, and by now you've probably heard that a reboot's on the way.

A few episodes of the new series recently premiered at Beyond Fest, and now the network's released the very first episode online. You can watch it now, for free, via the video embed we've thoughtfully provided for you below. If old school YA horror's your bag, you should probably give it a whirl!

This is just the first of three new episodes headed to Nickelodeon, all three directed by Power Rangers' Dean Isrealite and written by BenDavid Grabinski, who some of you might know as the man behind 2016's Johnny Knoxville/Jackie Chan actioner Skiptrace (this writer is familiar with Grabinski primarily through his work on Twitter, where he can frequently be found championing Steven Knight's Serenity; he is therefore a friend of the site).

We reached out to Grabinski for a comment on this new batch of Are You Afraid of The Dark? episodes, and here's what he had to say for himself:

“We’re all very excited to share the first episode of our new take on the Midnight Society. I hope fans can see how much the original series meant to me but this show is like Wu-Tang... it’s for the children.”

By all accounts, this new run of Are You Afraid of The Dark? episodes is strong, precisely the sort of thing you'd want to share with a younger sibling who's expressed a budding interest in the horror genre. You could also just show it to children who aren't related to you, I suppose, but that could very well get you into trouble. People get weird about that kinda thing.

The new Are You Afraid of The Dark? begins rolling out on Nickelodeon on October 11th.
