Y'know, now that we're here, it's kind of shocking that Disney hadn't already remade Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. The original, directed by Joe Johnston, is a beloved classic to an entire generation (a most nostalgic generation, I might add), successful enough to spawn not one but two sequels (one of which, okay, went directly to DVD), and with VFX being what they are these days, well, a reboot would seem like a slam dunk.
Apparently, Disney agrees:
“Honey, I Shrunk the Kids director Joe Johnston is in negotiations to helm Disney’s upcoming reboot of the film franchise, Shrunk, with Josh Gad in talks to star.
Gad pitched the story idea to Disney earlier this year, and the studio jumped on board the idea of reviving the classic 1989 pic starring Rick Moranis."
Yes, that's right: Disney's in talks with Joe Johnston to reboot the franchise he started all the way back in 1989, with Josh Gad also in talks to headline the project. One can easily imagine Gad stepping into the role made famous by Rick Moranis: Wayne Szalinski, the kooky everyman scientist whose latest experiment accidentally shrinks his kids (and a pair of kids who live next door) down to a quarter inch in height. Ten bucks says those kids encounter a Roomba this time around.
There's nothing further to report at this time - we dunno who else might start, when it might start filming, or when it might hit theaters (assuming this isn't headed straight to Disney+, which is a very real possibility), but of course we'll keep you informed as further updates roll in.
