HBO Max Is Getting An Animated AQUAMAN Series

Probably won't look like this, though.

Here's an unexpected development: according to Deadline, HBO Max has hired director James Wan to produce an animated Aquaman mini-series to its ever-increasing arsenal of content. Titled Aquaman: King of Atlantis and comprised of three chapters, the mini-series will feature "stand-alone stories laced with ecological and ethical themes".

Not much else is known about Aquaman: King of Atlantis as of this writing (who'll be voicing the characters, for instance), but the series joins a number of already-announced HBO Max animated series, including Looney Tunes Cartoons, Jellystone, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, Little Ellen, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, Rick and Morty, and The Boondocks. It's also the third Aquaman project on Wan's plate, following the highly-anticipated Aquaman sequel and the still-gestating The Trench (the horror-flavored Aquaman spin-off featuring those freaky-ass fish dudes that showed up in that film's third act). That's...a whole lotta Aquaman content.

Here's a synopsis of Aquaman: King of Atlantis, via the show's producers:

“The series begins with Aquaman’s first day on the job as king of Atlantis and he’s got a lot of catching up to do. Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up – Vulko, the scholar, and Mera, the water controlling warrior-princess. Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother who wants to overthrow him, Aquaman is going to have to rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects, and to himself, that he’s the right man for the trident!”

Yeah, sure, that's fine.

No word as of yet as to when Aquaman: King of Atlantis might debut on HBO Max, but we do know the streaming service will be up and running in May. Stay tuned for more on this - and many, many other HBO Max announcements - in the days, weeks and months ahead. We suspect there's plenty more to come, especially from the DC realm.
