Last year, just in time for its namesake holiday, Screamfest celebrated the 10th anniversary of My Bloody Valentine 3D as part of our ongoing Fears and Beers revival screening series, and it was an absolute blast to revisit (and, naturally, in its native 3D). I believe we promised then to play the original the following year - and folks, that time has come. The 1981 My Bloody Valentine is and probably always will be my absolute favorite of the non-franchise slashers*, and I assure you that if I wasn't hosting the screening I would have been the first to buy a ticket to see it on the big screen again.
The screening will be at the TCL Chinese 6 in Hollywood, on February 11th at 7:30 PM. Want to live like a king (or, me) and get in free? I have a pair of tickets to give to one of you lucky (and LOCAL!) MBV fans! All you have to do is email BMDContests@gmail.com and tell me your favorite kill from either version of the film, and include your full name so we can add you to the list! I'll be choosing a winner sometime on Monday, so keep an eye on your inbox. Didn't win? Luckily for you, tickets are only 16 bucks and you get a free beer with your admission (if you're 21+, that is), but since this is Los Angeles you could practically see it as paying for a drink and getting a free movie out of it. You can buy them HERE, and it's a good idea to buy in advance for the "golden era" slashers as they tend to fill up.
As a bonus, we will have a Q&A with actress Helene Udy, who played Sylvia, and since her demise is one of the movie's most memorable I'm sure she'll have fun stories about shooting that. And as always I'll have some Blu-rays to give out for trivia prizes, so come prepared! Also, we're doing this a few days before Valentine's Day to avoid conflicts with your romantic pursuits, but I say bring a date! A friend of mine went on one of his first dates to a previous showing of the movie a few years back and they're now married with a kid on the way, so this movie clearly works as a proper aphrodisiac. Good luck, and... good luck!
*Keep an eye out for next week's Collins Crypt for a thorough look at the film's new Scream Factory blu-ray!
