I've said it before and I'll say it again: any new Spike Lee film is worth getting excited about.
Time and again, Lee has delivered, and time and again we've been electrified by his work. 2018's BLACKKKLANSMAN, Lee's most recent film, earned him an Oscar, and now he's back with what appears to be a somewhat-raucous, somewhat-profound, somewhat-action-y Vietnam movie by the name of DA 5 BLOODS. Netflix just dropped the very first trailer for the film, and here we are - hyped all over again.
Take a look.
In the grand tradition of Netflix trailers, this one's probably a bit too long for its own good (seriously, folks - these things should max out at 2:30), but what's here looks compelling and fun and chewy. A typical Spike Lee joint, in other words. Of course, we won't get a chance to see this one in theaters, but we are getting a new Spike Lee film in the middle of what's starting to feel like a good movie drought. We can live with this tradeoff.
Here's an official synopsis:
"From Academy Award® Winner Spike Lee comes a New Joint: the story of four African-American Vets — Paul, Otis, Eddie, and Melvin — who return to Vietnam. Searching for the remains of their fallen Squad Leader and the promise of buried treasure, our heroes, joined by Paul’s concerned son, battle forces of Man and Nature — while confronted by the lasting ravages of The Immorality of The Vietnam War."
DA 5 BLOODS hits Netflix on June 12th. We will be there.
