Nicole Kidman Is On Fire In The First Trailer For DESTROYER

The BMD crew are big fans of Karyn Kusama, so you can imagine how excited we were when we learned that her long-awaited follow-up* to 2015's The Invitation would be a crime thriller...named Destroyer...starring Nicole Kidman. Without knowing anything further, we were sold.

Kusama's film screened at this year's Fantastic Fest to a largely positive response, and those of us who somehow missed those screenings (ed. note - It me) are thrilled to be getting our first look at the film via the trailer below.

Looks like a real ass-kicker. Check it out:

Well. That looks excellent, doesn't it? Few filmmakers working today are able to deliver the kind of tension Kusama's proven herself capable of putting onscreen (see also: The Invitation)(no, really, see The Invitation, it's amazing), and Destroyer looks like it'll continue that trend. Kidman, meanwhile, looks to be on fire here, disappearing into her role and taking no prisoners in the process. 

Admittedly, that trailer's a little vague on the story details, so here's an official plot synopsis:

"Destroyer follows the moral and existential odyssey of LAPD detective Erin Bell who, as a young cop, was placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results. When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past."

Destroyer will open in New York and Los Angeles on December 25th (Happy holidays!) before expanding to many more theaters in January. Stay tuned for further word on that release schedule, and hit the comments below to let us know what you thought of the trailer. * = Yes, yes - we're aware Kusama did a bunch of work in the TV world between The Invitation and now, in addition to directing a segment for XX. I'm referring specifically to feature-length films here. This probably went without saying, but you never know how pedantic the internet's gonna be, so here we are.
