Disney’s MULAN Remake Got A Teaser Trailer

Not a lot of man-making in this one.

There will never be silence when it comes to Disney remakes. With all the talk about the live-action The Little Mermaid’s casting and the super weird Lion King character posters, now is as good a time as any to get a trailer for Niki Caro’s Mulan:

It looks like a very pretty wuxia film to me, which might be the best way to go. Caro’s version reportedly will not be a musical, and will instead incorporate the animated film’s musical numbers purely as score. That might break the hearts of diehard fans, but I don’t really mind. There isn’t much value in retreading the same story in the same genre with the same songs, so making Mulan a straight action-war film might make this more refreshing. (Then again, what do I know? Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin somehow made over $900M.)

Aside from the songs, the thing I really felt was missing from this teaser is the central premise. Does Mulan even disguise as a man in this movie? There are a couple shots in this teaser that prove the movie goes there, but as such a major aspect of the story, it should be foregrounded better. I guess Disney is doing that thing where they aggressively market to the people who have already seen the animated film.

So does this teaser make you anymore/any less interested in this movie? What about the fact that it won’t be a musical and won’t have Mushu the dragon?

Mulan comes out March 27, 2020 in the US. God help McDonald’s employees everywhere if they decide to bring back Szechuan Sauce.
