ASSASSIN’S CREED: VALHALLA Gameplay Trailer Seems Curiously Light On Actual Gameplay

The cinematics sure are pretty, though.

We're not gonna run a separate post for every title showcased during today's XBOX Series X event, but it did seem worth knocking together a post for the ASSASSIN'S CREED: VALHALLA Gameplay Trailer. The latest AC title, revealed last week during an eight-hour (no, really) livestreamed event hosted by noted Twitter artist BossLogic, is due to be released later this year, and fans were excited to finally see what the game looked like in action.

We figured they'd show off one of the game's early missions, perhaps some footage of VALHALLA's main character clamoring over rooftops, evading capture in haystacks, or parkouring his way up the side of a castle. Instead we got what appears to be a series of in-engine cinematics with maybe a few shots of actual gameplay - virtually indistinguishable from those cinematics! - tossed in for good measure.

See if you can spot them!

By all accounts, ASSASSIN'S CREED: VALHALLA will offer a similar experience to ASSASSIN'S CREED: ODYSSEY, which leaned a bit heavier (to some fans' displeasure) on RPG elements than previous installments in the AC series. It's also expected to be around the same size, which - as anyone who's played ASSASSIN'S CREED: ODYSSEY can tell you - is unbelievably fucking gigantic. It was also overstuffed to the point of being unwieldy. I tapped out maybe 40 hours into that game (it felt like there were about 100 hours left and, quite frankly, I felt like I'd seen all I needed to see). BMD's Editor-in-Chief, Evan Saathoff, made it all the way through to the end, but was compelled to stop playing video games entirely for a few weeks afterward. It's a lot of game.

Will ASSASSIN'S CREED: VALHALLA also break him? We'll find out on October 16th, 2020.
