So Disney+‘s STAR WARS Obi-Wan Series Has Been Put On Hold

There's been a storm of conflicting information regarding the Obi-Wan Kenobi-centric Star Wars series set to debut on Disney+. Was it cancelled? Un-cancelled? For the past week, it's been the Shrodinger's cat of streaming series news. But today, Collider has confirmed that the Obi-Wan series has been put on hold as the Pinewood Studios crew has been sent home "indefinitely". Collider's report (which is worth a read) mentions that the series has been delayed, not cancelled, because Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy "was not happy with the scripts."

After the tumultuous conclusion of the Sequel Trilogy with The Rise of Skywalker, an enormous amount of pressure has been put on the Star Wars brand. (Although, let's be real, when hasn't there been a ton of pressure on Star Wars?) It makes a lot of sense for Lucasfilm to emphasize quality over quantity at this point, especially when they have new seasons of The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars coming down the pipeline already. The world will not be lacking for Star Wars shows.

As for Obi-Wan himself, well, I'm sure we have at least 15-20 years before Ewan McGregor suddenly metamorphoses into Sir Alec Guinness. That's a good window of time for the sharp writers in world to come up with good ideas for a series about him. Hossein Amini and Deborah Chow are still attached to write and direct, respectively, but I'd say the odds are 50/50 for a Disney Star Wars project to retain the same creative team from pre-production to final wrap. Ready those resumes.
