Lost BLUE VELVET Deleted Scenes To Be Included on Blu-Ray

We’ll get new perspective on David Lynch’s masterpiece when previously unseen deleted scenes show up on the upcoming Blu-Ray release.

David Lynch’s first cut of Blue Velvet was four hours long. Since he was contractually obligated to deliver a two hour film lots and lots of stuff got cut (although to be honest I don’t know if that four hour cut was an actual cut or an assemblage of footage - those always run insanely long). For some time the deleted scenes were thought lost, but they’ve apparently turned up in Seattle, according to Lynch. And he says that some of them may be included on the upcoming Blu of the film.

Talking to KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Lynch said:

There is a thing called b-negative, or outtakes, or lifts, that don’t make it into the film. And in the old days, those things sat around and maybe became dangerously close to being tossed away. Then the internet comes, and people want to see deleted scenes and things like this, so those things become more and more valuable.

So, one day I looked into seeing where the lifts were because some of these scenes on their own would be beautiful to see again. So I find out that Dino, the producer, doesn’t know where they are. They’ve gone. His company went bankrupt, it was taken over by another company, and then it was sold to other companies. No one knew where they were, they were gone. So depressing.

Lately, those have been found. Somewhere up in Seattle. It’s incredible. I’m seeing stuff I thought was gone forever. And hopefully some of those scenes (some of them aren’t worth putting back together) will end up on the new Blu Ray.

That’s via Film Buff Online.

DVD Talk had found a workprint of Blue Velvet a couple of years ago; I’m not sure if the deleted scenes Lynch is talking about are different from the ones they wrote about here. There are some pretty major amounts of footage cut, including entire subplots.

Here’s hoping Lynch doesn’t succumb to Director’s Cutitis and lets the deleted scenes stand on their own and the movie remain the movie.

There’s no date yet on the Blue Velvet Blu. Blu Velvet!
