CATCHER IN THE RYE, Starring Robin The Boy Wonder

Mixing JD Salinger and Bob Kane produces remarkable results.

Second way: Even though I hate mash ups, I keep seeing ones that actually work - like this Catcher in the Rye starring Robin. By making Robin, the world’s best-adjusted teenager, take the role of Holden Caulfield, the world’s most famous badly adjusted teenager, the entire thing takes on an interesting tone. Added to that is the fact that the artist, Andrew Lorenzi, has a style that looks like it would be at home in the newspapers Holden Caulfield might have been reading. Other Batman characters are well used - The Penguin is perfect as the pimp. And then Batman shows up as Mr. Antolini and I honestly think the whole thing takes on a level of brilliance. All at once the comic is dual commentary on Batman and on Catcher in the Rye and I’m simply blown away. Also, it’s really funny.

This is what a good pop culture mash up should be - you don’t have to know Catcher in the Rye or Batman inside out to laugh at the jokes, but when you do know both the entire project takes on another level. Very awesome.
