MACGYVER Movie In Development Despite Existence Of MACGRUBER

Weirdly, SAW creator James Wan is directing.

James Wan will be directing a movie version of MacGyver. Yeah, I don't know either. I mean, MacGyver? For those who don't remember, MacGyver was a pretty bad TV show about a guy who could make bombs and gadgets and stuff out of whatever bullshit was laying around. Like he could take pocket lint, Bazooka gum, a paper clip and the firing pin of an M-16 and produce uranium or something. He had a pretty fabulous mullet.

MacGyver's already been given the ultimate screen treatment in the brilliant masterpiece MacGruber, and no I am not kidding here. It's one of the funniest movies since Anchorman, even if almost nobody went to go see it. It effectively lampoons MacGyver (among other things), rendering any such movie redundant. It would be like if Boyz n the Hood came out after Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood.

James Wan is an interesting choice, I suppose. On one hand it's fascinating to see him finally make the leap to the big leagues; he's been generating smaller hits like the Saw films and Insidious for a while. And I guess the traps in Saw have a certain MacGyver-esque ingenuity? I'm wondering if New Line, who is making the film, has hired Wan because they want him to bring his low-budget smarts to the film?

Wan's a nice guy, so here's hoping this works out for him, even though I couldn't be less interested in seeing the film at all.
