[UPDATED] No More Mary Jane For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

She's a total gateway character, anyway.

It looks like the plot of Marc Webb's upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be a little less bursting than we though. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shailene Woodley, the actress cast for the role of Mary Jane. claims to have been cut from the film, though not the entire series:

"Of course I'm bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason... Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

While I feel bad for Woodley, this is probably for the best. The more we hear about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the more impossibly overstuffed it sounds. But now that Webb's big four-film plans are no longer a secret, it's less shocking that an actress' entire role can be cut in favor of the next movie. Unfortunately, this move also contains more dark portents for Gwen Stacey. And by that I mean she's going to have to take on Peter Parker's angsty moping all by herself. What did you think I meant?

UPDATE: THR claims this is going to be a full actor replacement, which indicates a bigger bummer than initially guessed. If this has anything to do with nerd outcry that Shailene Woodley is not pretty enough to play Mary Jane, then Hollywood is truly as awful as movies about Hollywood indicate.
