GHOSTBUSTERS 3 To Film By Early 2015, But Not With Ivan Reitman

The closer this film gets to existing, the more it loses reasons to exist.

I suppose the world as reflected in my Twitter feed does not represent the world at large because the world of my Twitter feed is utterly devoid of people who look forward to Ghostbusters 3. Even before Harold Ramis died, this was already looking like a cookie full of arsenic.

Now things are getting worse. For one, the film now has a general start date. It's going to start filming late 2014, early 2015 at the latest. Very soon it will no longer be a vapor film. Second, Ivan Reitman, director of both Ghostbuster films thus far, has decided he's no longer the reit man for the job and will stay with the project merely as a producer.

This all comes from an interview Reitman did with Deadline. You can read the whole interview yourself, but here's a choice excerpt regarding the film's script development:

The first [script] was done by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, and me, Harold [Ramis] and Dan [Aykroyd] helped them on it. It was a really good script, but then it became clear that Bill really didn’t want to do another Ghostbusters and that it was literally impossible to find him to speak to for the year or two we tried to get it going. When Bill finally…well, he never actually said no, but he never said yes, so there was no way to make that film. We decided to start over again, and I started working with Etan Cohen, with Dan lending a helping hand. Harold got sick about three years ago, and we kept hoping he would get better. I kept pushing forward on the Etan Cohen and we now have a draft that is very good, that the studio is very excited about.

Something about this whole thing just makes me sad. Not in a nerdy legacy way, but in a very real, "This movie is going to be accidentally menancholy" kind of way.
