ERASERHEAD Is Coming To The Criterion Collection
More good news for David Lynch enthusiasts: just a few weeks after learning that a brand-new, extras-packed Twin Peaks set is headed to Blu-ray, the good people at the Criterion Collection have revealed that Lynch's 1977 mindfuck, Eraserhead, will soon be joining their ever-expanding library of essential titles. And damn is this thing gonna look good. Here's the specs:
- New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed stereo soundtrack on the Blu-ray
- “Eraserhead” Stories, a 2001 documentary by David Lynch on the making of the film
- New high-definition restorations of six short films by Lynch: Six Figures Getting Sick (1967), The Alphabet (1968), The Grandmother (1970), The Amputee, Part 1 and Part 2 (1974), andPremonitions Following an Evil Deed (1995), all with video introductions by Lynch
- New and archival interviews with cast and crew
- Trailer
That 4K digital restoration means this has to be the best-looking version of Eraserhead that's ever been made available (in my day, we had to seek out Eraserhead on third-generation bootleg VHS tapes, and we liked it), which is reason enough to get excited about this. But I've never seen the accompanying doc, Eraserhead Stories, and would love to see some updated input from the cast and crew. Of course I wish the set included a commentary track from Lynch, but let's not look a gift deformed-hellbaby in the mouth.
Criterion's Eraserhead can be pre-ordered now. If you've never seen the film, I'd humbly suggest holding out a bit longer for the 4K version (and all the bells and whistles that go with it). It arrives September 16th, at which point you can do like Bruce McColloch does:
