Aquaman Is Getting A Solo Movie
Remember when Zack Snyder called in to a Detroit radio show to defend Aquaman? Partially it was because the character is showing up in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice* but also, it turns out, he'll be getting his own film.
Warner Bros has tapped two writers to work on a script... separately. They'll each be doing their own thing and the company will choose between them. This is not as uncommon a practice as you think, although usually the writers don't know they're in a competition. This time they do, thanks to the Hollywood Reporter!
The two writers are Will Beall, who wrote Gangster Squad, and Kurt Johnstad, who wrote 300: Rise of an Empire, so they're both Warner-friendly guys whose previous work (Beall's other IMDB credit is for the TV show Castle, while Johnstad 'wrote' Act of Valor) will not fill anyone with hope.
What will the Aquaman movie be? At this point it's anybody's guess since there are at least two scripts in development, but it could debut as early as 2016, which is when the first of the untitled DC Movies are scheduled. I have heard that in BvS Aquaman's story is tied closely to the oceanic World Engine, which we'll learn wreaked havoc on Atlantis. I can see a story coming out of that - Arthur/Orin fighting to take his rightful place on the throne of Atlantis after his father is killed by the World Engine, a real palace intrigue story. Beat The Inhumans to the Game of Thrones vibe, but underwater.
Jason Momoa is playing Aquaman, although Warner Bros keeps acting like it's a secret.
* this is actually the title of the movie, not a snide play on the title.
