DREDD Sequel That Won’t Happen Could Be A Prequel

Karl Urban keeps stoking those DREDD fires!

It's weird being out of step with the rest of your community. I'm out of step occasionally, and proudly so, but when it comes to Dredd I feel so out of step that I have to imagine I saw a totally different film from just about everyone else (who actually saw the film, which wasn't that many people). To me Dredd was a tedious, satire-free and repetitive (they killed the baddie the same way the baddie killed someone at the beginning. SNORE) exercise in juvenile grimdark. Everybody else thinks it's some kind of a masterclass. I don't see it. The movie stank, in my most personal of opinions.

But people want a sequel! They want more Judge Dredd that has been totally removed from any of its satirical roots and that pretty much panders exactly to the kind of stuff that John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra were parodying! And Karl Urban, who played Dredd in the movie, is one of them. He regularly fans the flames of Dredd sequel hopefulness, and the actor appeared this weekend at Chicago Comic-Con and got the fans riled up again. He said that a sequel would actually be a prequel, and that it could still happen despite the first film bombing.

"Why yes, there is a definite possibility. But, it is more likely that we will do the origins story with Dredd trekking through the cursed earth to find the first Chief Judge Fargo."

Fargo was the first Judge, and he's the guy from whom Dredd was cloned. Yes, Dredd is a clone. Max von Sydow played him in the Sylvester Stallone version.

The Cursed Earth? Sure. I'd still prefer Judge Death - isn't he XTREME enough for the new Dredd movies?
