MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Gets A Trailer Filled With Attempted Charm
First of all, can we all just make a deal where I don’t have to type the periods in U.N.C.L.E. whenever writing about this film? Can we come to that agreement? Here’s what the title looks like without them: Man from UNCLE. Oh shit. I guess it looks kind of bad that way. Okay, the periods stay, but I’m not happy about it.
Second of all, I’m surprised at how little I like this trailer. I once enjoyed Guy Ritchie a great deal and was eager to see Henry Cavill do something that required more acting muscles than we got from his version of Superman. But even in this brief look, I don’t find him very convincing as a human.
Actually, both Cavill and Armie Hammer seem like movie stars generated by a computer that thinks it understands what we want but really has no idea. They are both very handsome blanks. There are bits in this trailer where I found myself unsure if I was looking at these guys or other actors who just look like these guys.
That’s all pretty negative, so please chime in if you have an alternate reading of what this trailer’s selling. I see a lot of attempts at charm, but none of it worked on me. Perhaps my cold heart has lost its capacity for joy.
