The Canon Episode 39: THE HURT LOCKER

Awards expert Sasha Stone joins to discuss the underdog Best Picture.

It's another guest episode! Our last guest episode, featuring Bobcat Goldthwait and Barry Crimmins, was a little controversial. The freewheeling and funny conversation I loved in the studio turned out to be a problem for some listeners. Well, the bad news is that I'm sure we will have episodes like that again, but the good news is that this week's guest brings a clearer focus. Sasha Stone of Awards Daily, probably the top Oscar site, nominates The Hurt Locker for The Canon.

When we invited Sasha we knew we wanted her to bring a female-oriented film. We lean a little guy-movie on the show and Sasha is an outspoken feminist and supporter of female filmmakers. It turns out the film she nominated is perhaps our most masculine yet - at least in terms of how it portrays trauma and emotional disturbance - but it's directed by a woman, the great Kathryn Bigelow. That makes, I think, for an interesting conversation and for an opportunity to reconsider what kinds of movies we think female filmmakers want to make (I'm looking at you, Colin Trevorrow).

In other The Canon news: WIRED Magazine named our show one of the things you must known about in order to be culturally literate in 2016! We're right below Frank Ocean and on the facing page is Rian Johnson - it's pretty damned exciting.

Thanks, WIRED!
