So We’re Getting A BORDERLANDS Movie
Given the success of the franchise, it was probably only a matter of time before someone decided to take a stab at making a Borderlands movie. And given the overwhelming amount of love showered on this summer's Mad Max: Fury Road (part of a franchise whose aesthetic and attitude have directly informed Gearbox's game series), we probably shouldn't be surprised that that time is now. Per Variety, Lionsgate is moving forward with a Borderlands movie, to be produced by Avi and Ari Arad.
Do with that information what you will.
If you've never played any of the Borderlands games, they're basically Mad Max with a stronger sci-fi bent a lot more humor. The first game in the series had you storming around the surface of the planet Pandora, slaughtering wave after wave of bizarro creatures and speed-freak wasteland scavengers while searching for a fabled Vault that held...y'know, honestly, I don't recall. I've dipped into all of the Borderlands games (save for Telltale's recently-launched Tales From The Borderlands series, which is something else entirely), and I barely remember any specifics in regards to the plot. My main takeaway has been: one doesn't play Borderlands for the story so much as one plays Borderlands for the excellent action and the nearly-limitless variety of guns the game offers you.
And the looting. So much looting.
No idea how this'll translate to film, but I suppose it's not impossible. There's a lot of iconography to play with (if this thing pans out, you should expect to see many, many Claptrap toys), the game's mythology offers a variety of locations and colorful characters, and - considering the franchise's commitment to over-the-top set pieces - there's plenty of room for spectacle. I imagine this as a big summer release. Could be fun, could be obnoxious. Could be a little of both.
