Shout! Factory TV Is Putting On A Massive GAMERA Marathon This Weekend And Evan Will Be There!

Everyone loves Godzilla. That’s fine. He certainly deserves it. But Godzilla fans who have yet to experience the Gamera series are missing out on something really special. 

Gamera isn’t as polished as Godzilla. He doesn’t have a very deep bench as far as villains go (though Guiron from Gamera vs. Guiron aka Attack of the Monsters is probably my favorite Kaiju ever). A lot of his films revolve around children, which people automatically dislike. Furthermore, Mystery Science Theater 3000, while not overly nice to Godzilla either, has really taken poor Gamera to task.

But I don’t care. Gamera is great. Most Gamera films have a wonderful charm about them. He’s a much more obvious hero since he’s always saving kids. And most importantly, his films always seem to feature a strange amount of Kaiju gore and oddly brutal fighting.

This is all a preamble to the big news that Shout! Factory TV is putting on a massive Gamera marathon this Saturday featuring eleven Gamera films. Yes, that means they will be showing the seriously badass ‘90s trilogy as well as the old school entries.

But that’s not all! If you follow us on Twitter (@bmoviesd - though I assume you already knew that!), I will be live-Tweeting the marathon as it plays. Not all of it, probably, but as much as humanly possible!

In celebration of Gamera’s 50th anniversary, the marathon will feature eleven the classic Gamera movies from Gamera (1965) through Gamera 3: The Revenge of Iris (1999) 

Following the success of Shout! Factory TV’s Kaiju Movie Marathon in July, Shout! Factory TV has once again teamed up with the monster magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland to bring you the Kaiju Movie Marathon: Gamera’s Revenge! Featuring 11 Gamera films and hosted by Kaiju expert August Ragone the monster mayhem will stream live for 16 hours on October 17 from 8am ET to midnight ET.  The marathon marks the 50th anniversary of the first Gamera movie release in Japan.

The marathon will feature all 11 classic Gamera movies in chronological order from both the original Showa series (1965-1980) and the Heisei trilogy (1995-1999).

The Kaiju marathon comes complete with original introductions by renowned Kaiju authority August Ragone, commenting on the history and impact of these classic films. A two-time Rondo Award-winning author of Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters, Ragone has commented on Japanese film and popular culture on radio, television, in print, online, and at events for more than three decades.
