Ava DuVernay Will Direct A WRINKLE IN TIME

A very cool marriage of filmmaker and film.

Ava DuVernay has been rumored for some time to direct an upcoming adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s sci-fi young adult classic A Wrinkle in Time, but today Variety announced that she has officially come aboard the project. Which is great news! A Wrinkle in Time has been an incredibly important story for so many little girls over the years, and okay, boys too, but Ava DuVernay feels like a perfect choice to tell the story of awkward, brilliant, wonderful Meg Murry.

The script will be written by Frozen's Jennifer Lee, another terrific choice. It's apparently a bit of a passion project for Lee, for whom A Wrinkle in Time was a childhood favorite. According to Variety,

She impressed Disney executives with her take on the project, which emphasizes a strong female-driven narrative and creatively approaches the science fiction and world-building elements of the book.

Yes please! If the film does well, it could be followed up with adaptations of L’Engle’s sequels, including A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters and An Acceptable Time. I cannot wait to see Aunt Beast.
