IDIOCRACY Players Reunite To Take Down Donald Trump
When Mike Judge made Idiocracy, we were still a decade out from the possibility of a Donald Trump presidency. Back then, the idea that a guy like Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho (Terry Crews) could become President of The United States was far-fetched and silly, a gross exaggeration of the circus that American politics was just starting to become.
Ten years later, we are all too close to having a tiny-fingered, hollowed-out pumpking in a wig governing our fair nation, and suddenly things don't seem quite as funny...though that's not to say we can't combat the possibility with a little more humor.
This is precisely what Mike Judge, screenwriter Etan Cohen, and Idiocracy's Terry Crews are hoping to accomplish with a new series of anti-Trump ads. Cohen, speaking to Buzzfeed in a new interview, laid out the thinking behind the process, as well as the unexpected challenges they've had in putting it all together:
Throughout the process, Cohen and Judge have struggled to satirize Trump because he is already so outrageous. “If you’re making Idiocracy 2, and you’re trying to write whoever’s the heir to Camacho, if you put in Trump, it would be too silly to be in a movie,” Cohen explained.
But they worked through it — Cohen felt a call to action, saying these ads are very important to him. “This is what satire is for … to be able to hold up a mirror and say, ‘This is crazy,’” he said. “Idiocracy was like that, but this all of a sudden felt like a very immediate need for the true meaning of satire and what it can actually do.”
No word on where these ads might run (prediction: they'll end up at Funny Or Die), but I look forward to finding out what President Camacho's up to these days, and what he has to say about the looming threat of a Trump presidency.
Asked about the similarities shared by Camacho and Trump, Cohen (who says he'd absolutely vote for Camacho over Trump) explained:
“They both seem to be intent on destroying the world. But maybe Camacho more accidentally? The most dangerous contrast to Trump is that Camacho actually realizes he needs advice from other people, and knows that he’s not the smartest guy in the room. Also, not a racist.”
We'll keep our eyes peeled for Judge, Cohen and Crews' ads, and will share them with you as soon as they arrive. In the meantime, why not revisit President Camacho's State Of The Union address for a taste of what's to come:
