You’ll Never Guess Who’s Directing BEVERLY HILLS COP 4
The threat of more Beverly Hills Cop has loomed large for years. Sometimes it came in the form of a Brett Ratner film; sometimes it was a TV rebootquel. In any case, it has always been a highly-questionable idea (note: revisit Beverly Hills Cop III if you think I'm being harsh).
And now Paramount's back at it! According to Variety, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have been hired to direct the long-gestating Beverly Hills Cop 4.
First of all, congratulations to everyone who had Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah in the "Who Will Direct Beverly Hills Cop 4?" office pool! They said you were crazy and you proved every one of 'em wrong!
Secondly: if you're wondering, the answer is yes - Eddie Murphy will star in the film (they're abandoning the "What if Axel Foley's son was also a Beverly Hills Cop???" premise of the TV series). For those of you wondering about the possibility of a Bronson Pinchot cameo, well, the answer is probably.
As for El Arbi and Fallah: for many of us, this is the first time we're hearing their names! Apparently their film, Black, impressed a number of people at last year's Toronto Film Festival (it even won that year's Discovery Award), though nothing about the description of that film does much to explain why they'd be a good fit for the Beverly Hills Cop franchise:
(Black) centers on a 15-year-old girl in a gang in Brussels who must choose between loyalty and love when she falls for a Moroccan boy from a rival gang.
But again, most of us haven't seen Black yet, so what do we know? I'm assuming they were picked for a reason, and - if nothing else - I'm curious to find out what that reason was. Hand-picked by Murphy? By Paramount? Is Black funnier and more action-packed than anyone's letting on? You might be surprised by Paramount's choice, but there's no denying how interestingly left-field it is.
Anyway, no telling if this iteration of Beverly Hills Cop is actually going to happen, but we're closer now than we've been in the past. We'll keep you informed as updates arrive.
