Joe Cornish Might Be Making That SNOW CRASH Movie, After All

And he might be doing it very soon.

According to a new interview with producer Frank Marshall, Joe Cornish's on-again/off-again adaptation of Snow Crash may be happening, after all...and much sooner than we expected.

Collider's Steve Weintraub asked Marshall for an update on the project, which we haven't heard anything about for some time. Here's what he said:

“It’s a very, very cool book; and Joe Cornish is developing it with us and I hope we get started on that next year, I’m excited about that one… It’s a complicated story. It takes place in the near future and it has a lot of virtual reality in it, it’s a character that goes back-and-forth between what’s called the ‘metaverse’ in Los Angeles, but the sequences are fantastic and it really gives Joe the opportunity to show that great imagination that he has and create some fantastic scenes.

If you look it up you’ll see it’s sort of the bible of the internet universe. Neil wrote this back in the ‘90s and you’ll see it’s a very highly regarded book.”

That it is. For those unfamiliar with Neal Stephenson's book, here's the official synopsis, via Amazon:

In reality, Hiro Protagonist delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo’s CosoNostra Pizza Inc., but in the Metaverse he’s a warrior prince. Plunging headlong into the enigma of a new computer virus that’s striking down hackers everywhere, he races along the neon-lit streets on a search-and-destroy mission for the shadowy virtual villain threatening to bring about infocalypse.

Full disclosure: I've had a copy of Snow Crash sitting on my nightstand for about two years now, and have just never gotten around to reading it. But by all accounts it's a sci-fi classic, and given the truly staggering talent Cornish has displayed in the past (both in his directorial debut, Attack The Block, and in the script for The Adventures Of Tintin, which he co-wrote with friend and frequent collaborator Edgar Wright), I've gotta believe this is a project we should be rooting for.

Stay tuned for more updates on Snow Crash as they become available. Please spend the interim in the comments below, yelling at me for not having read the book yet. Motivate me!
