M. Night Shyamalan’s SPLIT Trailer: Starring James McAvoy, James McAvoy and James McAvoy
So, here's the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's Split, starring James McAvoy (a whole bunch of James McAvoys, as a matter of fact) and The Witch's Anya Taylor-Joy. It looks sort of like a cross between 10 Cloverfield Lane, Identity, and a message board argument about Hollywood's problematic treatment of mental illness.
See for yourself:
First things first: this is a goofy trailer. There's just no way around it.
Everyone involved (particularly McAvoy) is Capital-A Acting™, they're tempting fate by porting in the music from The Invitation (perhaps 2016's greatest psychological thriller), and some of the ideas rattled off here - namely, the idea that someone with multiple personality disorder might be able to alter their genetic makeup - are just flat-out absurd.
And yet, there is no doubt in my mind that I will see this movie.
Nevermind the fact that I'm a known M. Night Shyamalan apologist (reminder: I'm the guy who'll defend The Village); this movie just looks delightfully ill-advised. The premise might not reach the same ridiculous heights (lows?) of The Happening, but I feel like we're very close to that ballpark, and I can't wait to see how far Shyamalan takes things.
Split arrives January 20th. I'm going to bring beer.
