The Canon Episode #87: THE GENERAL

Let's get silent!

This week's episode of The Canon takes on Buster Keaton's 1926 film The General. Ambitious for its time, The General mixes comedy and drama in a way that confused audiences and critics, leading the expensive film to barely break even, which marked a serious change in the direction of Keaton's career.

While talking about the movie this week Amy and I hit on Hollywood's love of the Confederacy, we talk about the way audiences have a hard time seeing comics play straight, and we compare and contrast Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd.

Next week:  A Hard Day's Night!
