New Report Alleges That A MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Prequel Is On The Way

According to a new report from Australia's Herald Sun, a Mad Max: Fury Road prequel is en route, and may begin filming as early as the end of this year.

Here's what they're saying:

The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road starring TOM HARDY will be filmed in and around Broken Hill...

Pre-production is gearing up on the multi-million-dollar action-packed Warner Bros franchise, with NSW’s Broken Hill Studios Miller’s first choice for shooting, which could start as soon as later this year. Mad Max 4 was plagued by delays when extended rain turned the desert green and the uber director had to move location to Namibia.

The Herald Sun also claims that George Miller is onboard to direct, and that this is the long-gestating Mad Max: The Wasteland project Miller has spoken of in the past. Obviously, if this news is true, it's very exciting and we should all be dancing in the goddamn streets.

Here's the thing, though: I'm not buying it. For one thing, George Miller is on record (on more than one occasion!) saying that, while he'd love to return to the Mad Max universe, he really wants to do a smaller-scale film first. For another, a Fury Road prequel would completely upend the approach Miller has historically taken with the Mad Max series (they're all of a piece, but not continuations of one another). The majority of the characters in Fury Road have never crossed paths before the events of that film, so what would the prequel angle even be? 

Of course, I guess it's possible this is legit. Maybe Miller changed his mind (read: maybe Warner Bros. made an offer he couldn't refuse). Maybe the fact that neither Hardy nor Miller have anything in pre-production right now (Miller's signed on to produce Justice League, but that's it) points to this being a possibility. Maybe the world isn't the cruel and hopeless place we believe it to be, and another Mad Max really will start filming before the end of the year.

I honestly don't know. But until I get a press release from Warner Bros. announcing a start date, I think we have to take the Herald Sun's report with all the salt. How about you guys?
