I’m of the opinion that Doug Liman deserves the benefit of the doubt. Particularly when it comes to any ideas for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, I figure he knows way better than me how that should work.
But I get a little nervous when he starts describing the film as a prequel, as he did today while talking to Collider:
That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing—much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film—and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.
I’m not really sure what an Edge of Tomorrow prequel starring Tom Cruise would look like since that movie began with him being a cowardly asshole. On the other hand, this might not mean what we think in a story defined by time travel shenanigans.
And hey, Doug Liman is excited about it. That must count for something (despite the oddly hyperbolic nature of Liman’s other recent news story). We all want this movie to be good; that’s the main point. But man, nothing kills a buzz like the word “prequel”. We’ll just have to wait and see.
