M. Night Shyamalan On The Implications Of SPLIT’s Big Reveal

Months ago, I interviewed M. Night Shyamalan about Split at AFI Fest. Held back until today, we did manage to discuss the film's big ending reveal and what that could mean going forward.

A lot of people saw Split this weekend, so hopefully you all know what I'm talking about here. If not, SPOILERS await.

Seriously, SPOILERS.

For those who missed the movie but don't care about getting spoiled, Split ends with the return of Unbreakable's David Dunn as he learns of James McAvoy's "The Beast" while drinking diner coffee. The ending unites Split with the Unbreakable universe in such a way that audiences can't help but look forward to a sequel, which is exactly what I asked him about:

Regarding Split’s ending reveal, do you consider that a tease or a promise?

(Laughs) I’m surprised we didn’t talk about it last night [at the AFI screening]. It’s my intention to do a final movie. I never know what’s going to happen when I get in the room alone and start writing. So that’s the only reason it can’t be a promise. I may fail myself, and I don’t get inspired by doing sequels. What I like is the unknown, when I don’t know what I’m writing.

But I do have an idea. And I’m kind of excited about it. So I can’t say 100% yet. I might be able to soon, and it’ll turn into a promise then, but it’s not a promise yet.

I think that sounds pretty positive, particularly considering how well Split did this weekend. Hopefully, we'll start hearing more official news about this exciting possibility soon.
