Matthew McConaughey Will Be THE BEACH BUM For Harmony Korine

Here's some exciting news: Matthew McConaughey (who can currently be seen in Stephen Gaghan's Gold) has signed on to headline a new stoner comedy by the name of The Beach Bum. If you're not excited yet, please be aware that this movie will be written and directed by Spring Breakers' Harmony Korine.

Take it away, Variety:

“The Beach Bum follows the hilarious misadventures of Moondog, a rebellious and lovable rogue who lives life large,” according to a statement.

(Producer John) Lesher said: “In The Beach Bum, Harmony has crafted the perfect movie for our dark and serious time — a refreshingly original, irreverent, and hilarious stoner comedy that only he could create.”

This being a Harmony Korine project, I suppose there's every chance that thing could get derailed before it goes in front of cameras (Variety's report says nothing about Korine's other long-gestating projects, including Tampa and The Trap), but we're seriously hoping it doesn't: McConaughey playing a force-of-nature beach-bum type for Korine is something I think we all need to see, and as soon as humanly possible. We've earned this.
