James Gunn Will Direct GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3
Sometimes you dig for answers and come up short. Other times James Gunn stops you from even asking the question. Ahead of the press junket for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn took to Facebook to get ahead of some inquiries he anticipates from journos, sharing the news of his involvement with the series’ third installment directly with the fans:
“So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes – goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit. And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect.”
Hooray!
Gunn went on to talk about his stellar working relationship with Marvel. It really does seem like he’s having a great time there! He also got ahead of the inevitable “What was it like to work with Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone?” question (his answer: “Daunting” and “overwhelming”), but more importantly, he also droped a few hints about the future of the Guardians:
“Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers’ Infinity War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.”
The Guardians are taking on new members this year in the form of Yondu, Mantis and Nebula, and they’ll also add a few more by the time we hit Vol. 3. With the Avengers’ lineup set to change significantly in the coming years, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the same for these outer-space outlaws, giving Marvel one major Earth-bound team and one in the cosmos, each with a shifting roster in the long run. Could this be the last hurrah for the likes of Drax, Star-Lord and Gamora?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 doesn’t have a release date yet, though we can expect it to arrive sometime around 2020. In the meantime, get ready for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 releasing May 5th. Or April 28th, depending on how many Infinity Stones you have.
