Real talk? Despite the fact that I'm a fan of virtually everyone involved, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' Battle Of The Sexes just hasn't been on my radar much over the past few months. Maybe I thought it was just another biopic, maybe the focus on tennis was a subconscious deterrent, maybe I'm just already paying attention to too many ongoing film projects. Whatever the case may be, I haven't been following along.
And then the trailer below showed up, and I am now paying very close attention.
That looks pretty damn good! Carell seems to be relishing the opportunity to play a gigantic asshole - he's gone full-blown MRA in this thing! All that's missing is a fedora, a trenchcoat, and maybe a samurai sword - and Stone (who's worked with Carell on several occasions now) seems more than happy to throw it all back at him. Battle Of The Sexes looks funny, timely, and well-shot. I'm into this.
Here's your official plot synopsis, as mandated by Film Blogger Law:
"The 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) became the most watched televised sports event of all time. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With her husband urging her to fight for equal pay, the private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past."
Battle Of The Sexes arrives on September 22nd. You guys feeling it or nah?
