HBO And Jordan Peele Are Taking Us To LOVECRAFT COUNTRY

It's a racially-charged, Lovecraft-influenced horror anthology from Jordan Peele. Get hyped.

Here's some exciting news: Get Out director Jordan Peele is teaming up with Bad Robot and HBO to bring Matt Ruff's Lovecraft Country to television. What's Lovecraft Country? I'm glad you asked.

Take it away, Deadline:

"Lovecraft Country, the 2016 novel from Matt Ruff, focuses on 25-year-old Atticus Black. After his father goes missing, Black joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America to find him. This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the malevolent spirits that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback."

Deadline goes on to say the goal is to provide audiences with "an anthological horror series that reclaims genre storytelling from the African-American perspective", and - as anyone who's seen this year's excellent Get Out can tell you - that sounds right up Peele's alley.

Having not read Lovecraft Country, I was curious about some of the descriptions I saw floating around about it last night: it's being pitched as an anthology series, but also seems to have a throughline and a number of recurring characters. As it turns out, Ruff's novel is comprised of a number of short stories, their chronology fractured, and throughline that does incorporate the same handful of characters. Based on the descriptions going around about HBO's take on the material, I'm guessing that narrative will be less fractured, but will still present an overall mythology via self-containted episodes.

In addition to Peele - who's executive producing the series alongside Bad Robot's JJ Abrams and Ben Stephenson - the Lovecraft Country pilot will be written by Underground showrunner Misha Greene, who's also onboard to executive produce. Lotta talent behind the scenes on this one, in other words.

So, we love the concept, we love this team, we love the network, and we love Lovecraft. This is a slam dunk, guys. We can't wait to see it.

Stay tuned for more on Lovecraft Country as it becomes available. We're hyped.
