Check Out The LOGAN NOIR Q&A

Logan Noir, inspired by the fan response to James Mangold’s black and white production photos, was screened on May 16th in theaters across the country. And, yeah. It was awesome.

The black and white version leaned heavily into the noir vibe of the beginning of the film – the reluctant, retired detective comes back to solve one last case as jazz plays in the background. Logan’s Western influences were also clear. Images of Mexican deserts, hulking industrial relics, and long, grueling road trips all contributed to the spirit of it. 

“We wanted to make something more human,” said Mangold. “We really wanted to do a film that was a film first, and happened to feature superheroes, not a superhero film.” 

The R-rating provided them with the freedom to do this. “If the movie’s rated R, it’s rated on a curve… It reduces the box office, but it does something else. It suddenly means you’re not making a movie for six year olds and nine year olds and eleven year olds. It gave us a driver’s license to make – I hope you agree – a sophisticated movie, or a movie that took its time with the characters.”

Logan is available now on Digital HD, and comes out on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on May 23rd. And the Digital HD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD include a black and white version of the film, so if you missed Logan Noir on the big screen, you can catch it on the release.
