Static Shock Might Make It To The CW’s BLACK LIGHTNING

Black Lightning looks like Arrow did in its initial seasons, a more “grounded” show that’s sure to stand apart from the fantastical pack, which now includes Supergirl, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. If anything, looking like a separate entity will allow it to function as one too, but that doesn’t mean it won’t have its own roster of superhero appearances.

In an interview with International Business Times, showrunner Salim Akil gave us the following tidbits:

“I love the idea of Static Shock, and in success, hopefully, we’ll be able to pull other characters in in that way," Salim said. "So I’m holding out hope because I love that character.”

"The storytelling is a little bit more political. It’s topical, and it’s a little grittier. It doesn’t mean that down the road there won’t be visits."

That isn’t a confirmation, of course. Nothing really became of the Static live-action digital series that Geoff Johns was working on with Reginald Hudlin (nothing as far as we know; we haven’t really heard about it since 2015), so maybe that frees up the character to be introduced on Black Lightning at some point. That is, of course, assuming there isn’t some complicated TV rights issue with the former Milestone imprint.

It’ll be cool to have two black superheroes be a major part of a DC show, though hopefully it won’t mean they’re relegated to their own corner of this universe for too long. Black Lightning premieres in 2018.
