IT Director Andres Muschietti Confirms He’ll Return For Part II
It’s no secret we here at BMD are equal parts excited about and terrified of the upcoming cinematic adaptation of Stephen King’s horror epic, IT (TMI FYI: News Editor Scott Wampler has actually hired a second therapist just to talk about his crippling anxiety regarding the project). Not only did we do an in-depth dive into Cary Fukunaga’s re-written draft of the movie’s first half (which we’ve subsequently had confirmed is still about 60 – 70% present in the script’s final form), BMD has also incessantly inducted anyone who’s made a public ass of themselves in 2017 into the dreaded Pipe (registered trademark: Tha Wamp Industries).
While the trailer filled us with a new hope for IT (the cinematography by regular Chan-wook Park DP Chung-hoon Chung looks stunning), there’s still been a lingering question as to whether or not Mama director Andres Muschietti would be returning to helm the second part of the proposed killer clown diptych (for those who’ve been living under a rock: King’s 1,000+ page Derry, Maine murder ballad was initially set to be split into two features, with one following the Loser’s Club as kids, and another after they’ve grown up). With the initial teaser breaking the record for online views, it seems like Warner Bros. has a potential horror hit on their hands, so they should probably at least talk to the guy who’s seemingly delivering the goods behind the scenes.
Well, it seems Muschietti hasn’t just discussed finishing the IT duology with WB, but is actually making the movie. According to a recent interview with Variety, when asked about the potential of directing two films he replied:
“We are doing that. We’ll probably have a script for the second part in January. Ideally, we would start prep in March. Part one is only about the kids. Part two is about these characters 30 years later as adults, with flashbacks to 1989 when they were kids.”
Hot damn. That’s an exciting response. Not only does it guarantee we’ll be given a proper ending to Muschietti’s IT saga, one could read between the lines and infer that WB is rather pleased with the first picture (which hits theaters September 8).
There are a few other choice nuggets contained in that talk, where Muschietti discusses IT’s R-rating and Bill Skarsgard’s casting as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
