James Cameron Now Threatening To Produce Three New TERMINATOR Movies
In a new interview with News Australia, James Cameron (Avatar, Avatar 2, Avatar 3, Avatar 4, Avatar 5, The Abyss) says that he and producing partner David Ellison are now kicking around the idea of three new Terminator films, rather than just the one Cameron's already announced his intention to produce for director Tim Miller (Deadpool).
Says Cameron (as quoted by The Playlist):
"I am in discussions with (producer) David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the US market revert to me under US copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it."
A new trilogy, then, one which "reinvents" the Terminator mythology. On the one hand, three more Terminator movies sounds like an absolute beating, regardless of who's directing or producing them. On the other hand, reinventing the mythology is clearly the only way to go, after the last three Terminator movies proved - beyond a shadow of a doubt - that there was nowhere left to go with the Terminator mythology. And, hey, speaking of those past few Terminator movies, did you know that James Cameron didn't really like them?
Says Cameron:
"I think it’s fairly widely known that I don’t have a lot of respect for the films that were made later."
The prosecution would now like to draw your attention to Exhibit A:
Mr. Cameron, anything you'd like to add?
"I was supportive at the time in each case for Arnold’s sake because he is a close friend. He has been a mate of mine since 33 years ago so I was always supportive and never too negative. But they didn’t work for me for various reasons.”
Ah, the old "I did it to support my closer friend Arnold Schwarzenegger" defense. Unfortunately, that one's about as airtight as they come. The prosecution reluctantly rests, but it would also advise the ladies and gentlemen of the jury to be highly wary of any of Mr. Cameron's proclamations regarding the Terminator franchise in the future.
Stay tuned for more on the proposed new Terminator trilogy as we speed inexorably towards its arrival.
