Weekend In Review: THE DARK TOWER Opens To An Incredibly Ironic $19M

In what must be the most ironic box office opening of all time, Sony's The Dark Tower entered the top ten with a $19M ($19.5M, really, but go with me on this) haul this weekend, proving once and for all that the universe does have a sense of humor...and it's a particularly dark one. Critics weren't happy with the film (it's currently sitting at an almost-ironic 18% on Rotten Tomatoes; you can read my review here) and fans were generally turned off by the adaptation's streamlining of the source material, which probably means The Dark Tower's going to start sinking its way down the top ten very quickly. If you need me, I'll be over here pouring one out for what could have been. 

Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, meanwhile, is ending its third week in release with over $130M in US box office receipts (read: over $300M worldwide). It's the latest in a long line of successes for the director, further solidifying the perception that Nolan joints are virtually bullet-proof at this point. On a tangentially-related personal note, it's this writer's sincerest wish that Nolan just cuts the bullshit and make a prestige horror movie already. My prediction is that such a film would rule, and I would very much like to see it. Let's make it happen, Warner Bros.

Meanwhile, The Emoji Movie continues to be a film that people are actually paying money to see, despite the fact that it is called The Emoji Movie and stars TJ Miller. Let's ignore that and instead focus on the success of Universal's Girls Trip, which - after three weeks in release - is steadily working its way towards an induction into the $100M Club (it's at about $85M at the time of this writing). Anyone surprised at Girls Trip's success has apparently not been paying attention. Congratulations, Girls Trip!

Anyway, how are you folks spending your weekend? This is my first real weekend off since before SDCC, so most of my time has been spent on the couch, watching comfort food programming (the Wampler household is midway through a Curb Your Enthusiasm rewatch) and lazily knocking back a number of trash beers. Got new Twin Peaks to look forward to tonight, as well, so...all in all, feeling pretty great.
