James Wan Says THE CROOKED MAN Movie Will Be A Dark Fairytale

BONUS: We've also got an update on THE CONJURING 3.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, future Aquaman director James Wan has provided us with a few new updates on The Crooked Man and The Conjuring 3, both of which will be future installments in Warner Bros.' ongoing Conjuring Cinematic Universe.

In regards to The Crooked Man (a spin-off based on the creepy character introduced in The Conjuring 2), Wan says the film is in “early stages," and that...

"...We think we have a really exciting story. What we want to do, with The Conjuring universe, is we want each of our little offshoots to have a very different flavor, right? So, for example, Annabelle is the classic sort-of haunted doll subgenre. And with The Crooked Man, I would love to push it more down somewhat of that dark fairytale, and more whimsical, subgenre. I love the idea that, within the Conjuring universe, each of our little movies all have their own flavor, so that way they don’t feel like they’re the same films.”

This is strong approach, and lord knows we're always going to perk up when someone starts throwing around the phrase "dark fairytale". Those kinda movies tend to be right within our wheelhouse 'round these parts.

As for The Conjuring 3, Wan says:

"Of course, that is something that I am not neglecting. The Conjuring films are still the mothership and the mothership needs to be strong. (Laughs) The mothership needs to be strong for all these other jet fighters to shoot out of. So, we’re in the midst of working on the script, and still hashing (it) out. We want to make sure that the script is in a really good place. With how much people have loved the first two Conjurings, I don’t want to rush in to the third one if possible.”

To recap, James Wan is juggling the Aquaman standalone movie, the release of the next Annabelle, and the development of not one, but two more films within the Conjuring Cinematic Universe, including a third Conjuring film. Here's hoping that Wan - one of the nicest, hardest-working guys in the business - allows himself a little down time in the next few years. Maybe we should all pitch in and buy the dude a hammock.

Stay tuned for more on The Conjuring 3, The Crooked Man, and whatever other off-shoots come out of the Conjuring Cinematic Universe in the next few years.
