Weekend In Review: ANNABELLE: CREATION Keeps The CONJURING Cinematic Universe Plugging Right Along
If, after multiple onscreen appearance, you thought the evil little doll at the center of Annabelle: Creation had worn out its welcome with audiences, think again: the WB/New Line joint easily took the top spot at the box office this weekend, opening with an estimated $35M.
To be fair, the competition wasn't exactly stiff - the only other major new film in release is The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature (longest sigh imaginable) - but still: it's the latest win for the burgeoning Conjuring Cinematic Universe, and probably means we've got at least one more Annabelle movie to look forward to.
In other news, Sony's The Dark Tower plummeted to the #4 spot in its second week of release, bringing Nikolaj Arcel's heavily-anticipated (and much-derided) Stephen King adaptation to a grand total of around $34M. This writer's wondering how long it'll be before we hear another word about that Dark Tower TV show.
And, finally, let's all give a round of applause to Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, which officially crossed over the $400M domestic line just as the weekend rolled around. One suspected Wonder Woman would be a big-ass hit, but this...this is truly remarkable. If you're wondering, in terms of domestic box office it's second only to Disney's live-action Beauty And The Beast remake, which cleared over $500M during its run earlier this year (!!!).
What're you folks doing with your weekend?
Yesterday, on the recommendation of this glowing Jacob Knight review, I made time to watch Michael O’Shea’s The Transfiguration, which absolutely lived up to the hype. Give that a whirl on Netflix if you're looking for something a little different (and especially if, like me, you feel there's no blood left in the vampire genre). Today I'll be hitting a brunch showing of Annabelle: Creation at the Drafthouse, and then I intend to drink by a pool until tonight's Twin Peaks rolls around. All in all, not too shabby.
But, please: make your own recommendations and share your own adventures in the space provided below. We wanna know what you knuckleheads are up to!
